Toughened glass is an excellent addition to every space, renowned for its ability to brighten up and modernise any home.
Despite these benefits, though, many people are put off incorporating them into their homes due to safety concerns.
But are they right to be worried?
In this post, the Express Toughening experts explore everything you need to know about toughened glass, from the manufacturing process to safety benefits, to help you decide if it’s the safest option for your home.
What is toughened glass?
Toughened glass, also referred to as tempered glass, is glass that’s been heat treated to make it stronger and safer.
It’s used for many different applications, including windows, doors, balustrades, shower screens and more, to provide security and enhance aesthetics.
How is toughened glass made?
Toughened glass is made by heating a sheet of standard annealed glass to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling it. The glass is heated to around 620°C before it’s rapidly cooled with cold air jets.
This process creates tension and compression in the glass, with compressive strength of the outset layer creating tension in the interior, making it up to five times stronger (and safer) than other alternatives!
Before this process begins, though, the glass must be cut down to size, as it cannot be re-cut once it’s been toughened, so make sure you get your measurements spot on before ordering bespoke products.
Is toughened glass safe to use in my home?
Being much stronger than typical, everyday glass, you can be confident that toughened glass is safe to use around your home.
The heating and cooling process not only makes toughened glass stronger and safer but also makes it more resistant to heat and shock, and when it breaks, it shatters into small, blunt pieces instead of large, jagged shards – further enhancing safety and reducing the risk of injury.
Toughened glass has a lot more than this to offer, though, and you can also benefit from the following:
- Durability – Resistant to scratches, abrasions, and weathering, toughened glass can last in your home, if taken good care of, for up to 30 years.
- Easy maintenance – Toughened glass requires minimal upkeep, making it perfect for those who don’t have the time or patience for constant cleaning.
- Versatility – Being clear, toughened glass fits seamlessly into pretty much all home designs, be they modern and minimalist or more traditionally styled properties.
